Universities and HeppSY+

After a successful 3 years running the HeppSY+ programme, De Warenne Academy are now in their fourth year of working with HeppSY+ to offer a wide range of higher education activities and sessions to pupils in Years 9-11 which will excite, inspire and encourage our pupils to consider Higher Education as one of their future career options.

About

HeppSY+ work in partnership with schools to increase the number of young people progressing to higher education

HeppSY+ is part of a national programme to support young people most at risk of missing out on higher education. It stands for Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire Plus.

HeppSY+ builds on the work of the existing Higher Education Progression Partnership (Hepp) involving Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield and the South Yorkshire colleges of further education.

De Warenne Academy aim to work with students in Y9-Y11 and offer them a wide range of activities including the following:

The Brilliant Club

The Brilliant club is an academic programme, which works with Key Stage 3 students and includes the following aspects:

  • Pupils will have six tutorials with a PhD tutor, with most being current researchers and lecturers to students at university. This is a unique opportunity for your child to experience university-style teaching.
  • Pupils visit two leading universities at the beginning and end of the programme.

At the end of the programme, pupils will complete a 2000 word assignment based on the tutorial topic

STEM for Girls

The shortage of skilled workers and students in STEM is only half of the story. More alarming is the shortage of female skilled workers and pupils in STEM. This is the main reason for inviting a group of female pupils to take part in a STEM for girls day at The University of Sheffield.

Mobile Classroom

The mobile classroom is a double decker bus, enabling two simultaneous sessions to take place with different themes and content. It can accommodate between 30-35 pupils with activities for students in Year 9-11. The sessions include presentations, workshops, activities, games and quizzes, all of which are tailored to suit specific year groups.

University of Sheffield Visit

Groups of pupils throughout the year visit The University of Huddersfield, to which they learnt about student life, courses on offer, finance and get to meet and speak to students from the university.

PUSH Talk

A fantastic, inspiring motivational speaker Moj Taylor from PUSH delivers a session each year to one select year group which include topics on; student finance, myth busting, courses, accommodation and so much more. The memorising performance includes a comedy aspect which grips pupils from the very beginning and at the same time gets the objective across regarding higher education.

These activities are just a few examples of the wide variety that De Warenne offer. Others include UCAS and personal statement support, student finance talks and employer encounters as well as select universities being present to speak to at parent consultation evenings.

Careers in the Curriculum

These sessions are fantastic to explore careers and skills developed through curriculum subjects, for example Maths, History, Languages, Engineering and Health & Social Care. These have been delivered at De Warenne in curriculum areas for French, Maths & Science.
