  • Sporting triumph at the SPTA games

    De Warenne athletics prowess was on show again at the annual SPTA games held at the Keepmoat Athletics Stadium in Doncaster. A strong field was present with nine academies represented in both U13 and U15 catergories.

    Throughout the day our athletes took part in a number of track and field events with some excellent results. Amongst the highlights were:

  • Y7 RS Super Learning day

    June saw the first ever day dedicated to RS for Y7 students who were excited and looked forward to attending the different workshops .

    Most had the opportunity to explore three different religious traditions. There was meditation in Buddhism, a quiz on Islamic facts and the enactment of the last hours of Jesus' life in Christianity. There were visiting speakers to all three sessions and students were given opportunity to ask questions and learn all about the different religions.

    Students across Years 7 to 10 competed in the annual Doncaster Schools Athletics Championships held at the Keepmoat Stadium.

    The first day of the event saw years 7 and 8 taking part with Elisha Brown destroying the competition in the 100m heats and finishing a credible 5th in the final. Daniel Newby won his heat in the 200m and ran brilliantly to finish 3rd in the final. Field event success came from Lauren Coggins 3rd in the shot put and Hollie Rowe 4th in the long Jump.   • Farewell to Year 13, class of 2014

    In June we wished farewell to Year 13 students at a special celebration assembly. Awards from individual subjects were presented to students for effort and attitude during their time in the sixth form. There were also thanks given to the Head Boy and Girl and their deputies for their excellent service to the academy.     At the beginning of year 10 I was recommended by Miss Wain-Hobson, my PE teacher, that I join an athletics club due to the success of winning the 200m with a time of 27.75 at the English Institute of Sport School Partnership Trust athletics competition. Miss Wain-Hobson wrote me an information letter explaining everything I needed to do to join the nearest athletics club, which just so happened to be 20 minutes away from my house.     Sports Day this year took place on Wednesday 18 June. Holly came into the competition as holders of the title, a position they had maintained for three consecutive years. They were also in the lead at the beginning of the day as they had won three of the four inter-house football competitions that had taken place the week before.   • Staff Student badminton

    There was a good turn out from both staff and students for this year's badminton challenge. Teams were drawn on the night and then put into 4 pools to compete against one another. The winners of each pool went through to the semi-finals.

    Semi-finalists were Miss Wain-Hobson/Adam Davies, Mr Storey/Devon Robb, Mr Burger/Josh Taylor and Mr Turton/Tyler Moreland.

    The final was contested by Mr Storey/Devon Robb and Mr Burger/Josh Taylor. After a close fought match, Mr Storey and Devon came out winners.

  • Official Opening

    Thursday 1 May 2014 saw the official opening ceremony of the De Warenne Academy building by Councillor Christine Mills (Chair of Governors) assisted by Head Girl Abbie Trow and Head Boy Connor Finnan.

    We were delighted to welcome Sir Paul Edwards, Chief Executive of SPTA along with representatives from Wates Construction and Doncaster MBC, headteachers of our local primary schools, members of the academy Governing Body, PC Janine Kelly and the Student Council House Leaders.

  • BLACKPOOL HAIR FESTIVAL 2014

    A group of students who are studying hairdressing in the sixth form recently attended the Blackpool Hair Festival. This is a national competition where students can both compete and spectate. The standard is high as competitors come from salons and colleges all over the country.     De Warenne Academy’s Fund Raising Committee lead by Danii Taylor organised an amazing Sport Relief event on Friday 21 March as students and staff donned their sports kits and teachers challenged students to a variety of sport events.

    In March the De Warenne samba group and choir took part in the regional 'Youth Music' Festival in Garforth. The ensembles had been working incredibly hard in preparation for this event under the guidance of their ex pert music directors and the students loved every minute of the day.     Following their success in the Doncaster Schools’ Trampolining Competition where they qualified for the South Yorkshire Finals the De Warenne trampolining teams committed themselves to intensive training and preparation.

    In January they went to Sheffield to compete in the finals and, with Balby Carr School, were the Doncaster representatives.TV fame accompanied the team as the event was covered by BBC Look North. They also appeared in the Sheffield Star newspaper.

    A group of Year 8 students who are following the Write Right course were invited by the Sheffield Steelers to report on an ice hockey game. The students were welcomed into the press room to interview head coach Doug Christiansen before the game. Bob Westerdale of the Sheffield Star, Seth Bennet of the BBC and Peter Spencer were also on hand to answer any questions about journalism and how to create the perfect article.

    De Warenne Academy was pleased to host Key Stage 2 PE training for teachers from the Conisbrough and Mexborough pyramid.

    The Matalan TOP Sport resources have been designed to help teachers unlock the potential of all children in PE at Key Stage 2; developing their thinking, physical and social skills, while enhancing their health and well-being. Teachers took part in delivering games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and adventure lessons.

    Sixth form students from De Warenne Academy and Rossington All Saints Academy went on a joint visit to the University of Sheffield Department of Biomedical Science electron microscope facility. The students, who are studying Level 3 Applied Science BTEC, enjoyed a guided tour of the laboratories and found out how the microscopes can be used to magnify specimens over 150,000 times.

  • Celebration of the Arts

    Students of all ages were invited to take part in the first House Music Competition which was organised by the Y13 music group as part of their BTEC Level 3 studies the students. Students competed in three categories: vocal, keyboard and instrumental and all performers received a certificate and earned points for their house.   • Mini Graduation Ceremony

    Sixth Form students are presented with certificates by the Mayor of Leeds at a mini graduation ceremony at Leeds Metropolitan University. The event celebrates their success passing the 'Progression Module' which is a project completed independently during Year 12 that entitles students to 30 extra UCAS points.

  • Joyeux Noel: Lille Christmas Market!

    In December 2013 forty De Warenne students braved high seas and superstition to make an epic journey to France. After a 'restful' night's sleep aboard the Hull to Zeebrugge ferry, students made their way through Belgium and Northern France to Lille to sample its many delights. Two groups toured Lille's medieval centre and marvelled at its stunning cathedral, learning much about its history.     On 4 December De Warenne students competed for the first time in a Cross Country event at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. The team consisted of four students from Years 7, 8 and 9. The course was tough, muddy and very wet with two very steep hills but our team did very well. Champion of the day was Kai Bailey in Year 7 who came second in his race, qualifying for the South Yorkshire Cross Country Championships.
