Year 8 report on the Sheffield Steelers

17th February 2014

A group of Year 8 students who are following the Write Right course were invited by the Sheffield Steelers to report on an ice hockey game. The students were welcomed into the press room to interview head coach Doug Christiansen before the game. Bob Westerdale of the Sheffield Star, Seth Bennet of the BBC and Peter Spencer were also on hand to answer any questions about journalism and how to create the perfect article.

Students watched the warm up at ice level, before going up to their seats to enjoy the game and watch the Steelers beat Nottingham 5-2.

After the game four students got the chance to interview captain (and man of the match) Steven Goertzen. The students asked some brilliant questions and really made the most of their opportunity to be real sports journalists. David Simms of the Steelers was very impressed with the group's interview skills and behaviour and said 'they were all impeccably well behaved and are welcome back to the Steelers at any time.'

An account of their visit was included in the programme for the following game and some of their work was published in the programme the following week.
