De Warenne Academy Library 'Official Opening.

4th July 2013

We were delighted to welcome best-selling children and young peoples' author Mark Robson to officially open our library on the 4th July . In the morning Mark held two workshops on short story writing for a selection of our year 8 students. The official opening was marked by the cutting of a ribbon held by the library dragon mascots which then revealed an official plaque commemorating the occasion. Over lunch, Mark answered the very well thought out questions put to him by librarians and book club members.

After lunch Mark delivered an author talk to the Portals Book Club and the librarians describing his life before becoming an author and the lengths he goes to to research his characters. He told the group how he had also learnt martial arts before going on to become a black belt instructor and running his own classes. By way of demonstration he broke a 3cm thick piece of wood into two pieces with his hand!

After the talk Mark signed copies of his book for students and agreed to choose the names for the De Warenne dragons from all of the entries submitted. He chose the name Chapter for the grey male dragon, and Verse for the red female dragon. These names were put forward by Harriet Brammer, one of our sixth form students. All of Mark's books are available from the library.
