Doncaster Book Awards Finale

26th June 2013

Members of the Portals Book Club attended the final of the Doncaster Book Awards at Cusworth Hall . The students had read the books in line for the award and had voted for their favourite. Also in attendance were the library mascots, the De Warenne Dragons. The theme for the day was the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and over 350 children and staff from participating schools took part. Our group took along Brooke Ackroyd's winning entry in our design a teapot competition.

The winning author voted by secondary schools was Cathy Cassidy for her book, 'Summer's Dream'.The winner of the primary schools' award was Liz Pichon's 'Everything's amazing (sort of)!' The winner of the Best Modern Classic section was won by John Boyne for 'The Boy in the striped Pyjamas'. Cathy Cassidy accepted her award in person and talked about how she became an author. Cathy posed for photos and signed her books for those purchasing them, including her latest book 'Coco Caramel',which will be available to borrow from the school library very soon.

There were prizes awarded to the audience and three of our students were lucky enough to win a book. All took part in workshops, thoroughly enjoying the one run by local author and illustrator, Phil Sheppard, dressed as a very green Mr. Toad. The day culminated with a gigantic Mad Hatter's tea party on the lawn, with a cupcake treat , courtesy of Doncaster Rovers.
